It’s a very odd primary season. Two of the remaining GOP candidates are aligning against their presumptive nominee. The Democrats are hosting an Independent calling for revolution. And, the Socialist Equality Party is hoping to take over that revolution. Why not add a new undercurrent of the bizarre?
Enter Jill Stein, the Green Party presidential candidate with her siren’s call to Bernie Sanders. She’d like him to toss his worn hat in the ring with her.
In an open letter to Sanders following his defeat in New York, Stein offers Sanders consolation and a plea for solidarity. She encourages him to join her and open “a window of historic possibility outside the Democratic Party.”
The letter is clearly an overture for a third-party run by Sanders. It’s not clear whether Stein expects him to enter the Green Party or create a new independent coalition.
In language very similar to the rhetoric of the Sanders camp, Stein bemoans his rough handling by the “neoliberal Democratic machine,” citing “an unjust attack” by the NY Daily News and a negative editorial by economist Paul Krugman.
Stein also finds fault with the Democratic National Committee, the pledged delegates to Hillary Clinton and the super delegates.
The Bernie-or-Bust coalition has long threatened a Green Party vote should Sanders not win the Democratic nomination.
Candidate Bernie Sanders already has strong ties to the Green Party via his brother. Larry Sanders, an ex-pat living in the UK, is a party official with the UK Greens as described here.
