Canadians Top the List of Foreign Donors to Sanders Campaign

Here’s a look at the most recent foreign nationals whose contributions to the Sanders campaign were acknowledged by the campaign’s principal campaign committee, BERNIE 2016. The contributions were all made during the month of March 2016.

As already reported here, the Bernie Sanders campaign received 674 contributions from foreign citizens in that month. Accepting this money is prohibited by federal law yet, the Treasurer of Bernie 2016 lets the funds flow into its campaign coffers. The campaign is quite nimble at manipulating digital media yet, when it comes to using accounting software with filters for foreign addresses, that proves an impossible feat.

This post looks at which country is funding this United States candidate for the presidency.

This data is publicly accessible as a file submitted to the Florida Election Commission by BERNIE 2016, following the standards of campaign finance transparency.

A number of individuals contributed multiple times during the single month.

The overwhelming number of contributions came from citizens of Canada with 91 recorded. Thirty-one contributors did not reveal their country but presumably were traced from their credit card data.

Summary of Country Contributors:

  • AUSTRALIA – 10

    • It means the contributors tried to hide their country of citizenship by writing in single letters, nonsense and words like “here.” They were identified by the FEC through the tedious task of looking up their credit card data. Once identified by the FEC, Bernie 2016 was forced to confirm that these 674 were not American citizens or legal residents.

What a waste of time & money to detect deception!
