The Mealy-Mouthed Republicans

gop cowards

They waited for Donald Trump to read his “many sides” script in the immediate aftermath of the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. Then the mealy-mouthed cowards of the Republican party echoed his words.

These members of Congress were thankful for his lead. Trump gave them the acceptable lines. They carefully excluded the significant terms: nazi, KKK and white supremacist. Just as their leader had done. Their phrases carried the moral equivalence of those “thoughts and prayers” memes delivered after a catastrophe.

One by one, the weak of heart spouted their litany of sorrows. One after another, they mourned the violence, condemned the hate but refused to call out the actual groups who were responsible.

These are the Republicans who, for whatever reason, for whatever fear, were loath to say the words nazi, KKK or white supremacy in their reactions. Only a brave handful pinned responsibility on the purveyors of hate during that violent afternoon.

Following the script delivered from Bedminster on 12 August, these GOP members of Congress carefully avoided the wrath of their racist president and the ire of their racist base. They enveloped their outcry in platitudes and non-specific generalities.

They refused to name the enemy.

Two other points are enveloped in this Republican reaction.

  1. Many members of Congress said nothing (based on social media).
  2. The follow-the-leader echo chamber reveals the depth of allegiance to Trump among the GOP Congress, even in these vicious circumstances and even with a president sinking under historically low ratings.

The American public – of any party – must ask: how far will the mealy-mouthed Republicans go in their blind loyalty to this treacherous, morally void person? Will they follow him over the cliff of treason? Will they protect him from impeachment? And, most importantly, what do they gain in exchange for their moral cowardice?

Here then is a list of the mealy-mouthed Republicans in Congress.
